Abstract: The article introduces the figure of Władysław Sarna (1858–1929) and his two texts devoted to the former counties of Galicia: Opis powiatu krośnieńskiego pod względem geogra-ficzno-historycznym [Description of the Krosno County from geographical-historical perspective] (Przemyśl, 1898) and Opis powiatu jasielskiego pod względem geograficzno-historycznym [Description of the Jasło County from geographical-historical perspective] (Jasło, 1908). In the following part, the content concerning the legal and ethnic cir-cumstances of the settlements and locations under German and Vlach laws contained in both works was analysed. Based on the information in the Descriptions and contemporary literature, a data–base was developed for each described settlement with the time of their appearance in historical sources and the law under which they functioned.
